01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Some days call for nothing more than a well-rounded meal of warm rice, soup, and hearty side dishes served on a single tray. Tucked into Bunkyo Ward's Mukogaoka neighborhood, Shun Etsu is an old-school neighborhood diner turning out a wide array of teishoku set meals built around fresh fish, deep-fried classics, and savoury stir-fries.
From Ocean Catches to Crisp Cutlets
Seafood forms the backbone of the extensive menu. Guests can choose from aromatic salt-grilled mackerel, yellowtail teriyaki, and crisp fried horse mackerel, as well as yellowtail collar and sashimi plates featuring tuna or yellowtail. Those in the mood for meat will find plenty of substance in the saucy ginger pork, grilled beef teishoku, crunchy chicken katsu, and mixed fried platters. There are also inventive variations on offer, including refreshing chicken or fried mackerel topped with grated daikon radish, or versions accented with spicy kimchi.
An Easygoing Neighborhood Shokudo
With its unpretentious dining room, the restaurant welcomes solo diners as warmly as small groups, making it a dependable stop for an evening meal as well as a quick lunch. At night, it easily doubles as an izakaya: patrons can order beer and other drinks alongside small dishes such as chopped horse mackerel tataki, fried aubergine, and crisp river shrimp. Payment is cash only, so keep notes or coins handy when you stop by.
